By Silvina Moschini

After the famous “blackout” against Sopa, which saw protests against the proposed anti-piracy law on the front pages of the big websites, and the bill’s loss of support in Congress, the FBI announced the taking down of the web’s most popular download website.

Hand in hand with this, five of Megaupload’s executives have been arrested and accused of being part of a criminal organization responsible for worldwide online piracy. The arrests were made in New Zealand, and among the accused are the founder, Kim Dotcom (also known as Kim Schmitz), the site’s graphic designer, the head of business development, and the head of programming. New Zealand courts will have to decide whether or not to allow the extradition of the founder of the company to stand trial in the United States.

Hand in hand with the Law?

The authorities state that the decision has nothing to do with the bill, given that the investigation has been open for more than two years, and the police operation was approved two weeks ago. Among the various reports presented to validate the accusation is an email sent by Google Adsense to Kim Dotcom stating that the Megaupload site contained links to copyrighted content, and for that reason they could no longer continue to work together. This accusation led the company to create its own advertising agency. Also conversations between executives of the company have been released in which they refer to themselves as not being “modern-day pirates”, but pirate “shipping service” providers. The company is accused of grossing more than $175m in profits from this illegal activity, resulting in losses of more than $500 m for copyright holders.

Although the proof seems to validate the accusation, on the Megaupload site users can’t search for links to copyrighted content. This means that the links in which copyright law is infringed have been shared with third parties. For this reason the company created the so-called “abuse tool”, which permits the flagging of links that infringe the law, and there being blocked or removed by the system itself.

The reaction

The hackers group Anonymous has claimed responsibility for blocking and bringing down the websites of the US Department of Justice, and Universal Music, among others. This action has been named Operation Reprisal.

Conversely, the French government has congratulated the US authorities on the decision to close the download site.

Megaupload in figures

The company, founded in 2005 by Kim Dotcom (owner of 68% of the company) has more than a billion users, representing 4% of all Internet traffic. According to the accusations made by the US authorities, most of its income was received via PayPal, the service used to receive payment for Premium account services. In only five years subscribers paid more than $110m.

Also, bank transactions to the value of more than $40m in company accounts, including hotel bills and yacht rentals, have been discovered. Among documents presented by the FBI, it is revealed that the online-payment company Money Bookers (PayPal’s competitors) made transfers of more than $5m to Megaupload. Adbrite also paid them more than $840,000 for publicity. The income from associated sites comes to nearly $25m.

It is no secret that Latinos are the largest minority in the country and growing not only in terms of numbers, but influence. That influence is expanding rapidly thanks to the internet and accessibility of mobile devices. The last few years have proven that there is no question that Latinos are wired and so it is no surprise they are a leading force behind social media. What is surprising are the results of Zpryme Research and Consulting which showed an estimate on how much Latinos spent over the 2011 holiday season on popular mobile technology: $5.15 billion. According to Zpryme, that is approximately $1.4 billion more than last year or nearly a 30% increase from the 2010 holidays.

“The Hispanic holiday spending spree on mobile was no accident; this nation’s largest and youngest minority group will continue to seek out all-things-mobile in ‘12,” said Jason Rodriguez, CEO, Director of Research of Zpryme.

The survey of over 500 Latinos found that the top three popular mobile devices with Latinos were tablets on which they spent nearly $2 billion ($1.70 billion), laptops with over $1.5 billion spent, and smartphones on which they spent a little under $1 billion. Other popular devices included notebooks, MP3 players/IPODs, and e-readers.

“Hispanic demand for digital content can be more easily delivered on mobile technology platforms such as tablets and smartphones,” explained Rodriguez. ”The fact remains that mainstream U.S. programming such as T.V. and radio for Hispanics (in both English and Spanish) can’t keep pace with their specific preferences and can be more easily met and targeted with apps via mobile devices.”

The numbers are staggering and abundantly clear. What is not clear is why more advertisers are not jumping at the opportunity to target the lucrative “wired” Latino market that is obviously ready, willing and able to spend.

The Vatican’s admission to using Wikipedia as a source of information about its cardinals-to-be highlights issues of online visibility for individuals, companies, and institutions.

While the SOPA bill (Stop Only Piracy Act), and its Senate counterpart, PIPA (Protect IP Act) are under debate in the United States, British newspaper, The Guardian, has revealed that the Vatican itself relied on Wikipedia in writing the biographies of 22 newly appointed cardinals.

The connection between the Vatican and the U.S. Congress is closer than it first appears. The American proposal—which Google, Facebook, and Wikipedia itself oppose—calls for strict regulation of Internet content and access, but the Vatican’s use of Wikipedia demonstrates the importance of collaborative digital platforms that remain unregulated.

Wikipedia is just the most important of several sites dedicated to the free exchange of information. That it is consulted almost 3,000 times per second worldwide surely confirms its value to users. Its reliability is sometimes perhaps questionable, but its preeminence on the web is indisputable. Institutions, governments, multinational companies, and celebrities all pay attention to it, whether or not they admit doing so.

Wikipedia’s power is derived from the privileged position of its articles in Google search and from the simplicity and clarity of its information. It effortlessly answers “who’s who” in any field…even religion.

Therefore, in publicly admitting its copy-and-paste exercise, the Vatican says less about the limitations of its own internal information systems than about the power of a digital window where everybody wants to be seen. The question, of course, is the quality of what viewers see in that window.

Virtual modifications, real effects

The rules that govern Wikipedia allow anybody, anywhere, to act as a content editor. This carries with it the risk that erroneous and/or malicious information can be posted in any of the thousands of Wikipedia entries.
The consequences of such virtual modifications are alarmingly real. For example, the Vatican has had to correct some false information it published on the basis of Wikipedia’s third-party reports. On the other hand, absence from Wikipedia has its own consequences. Would the Vatican consider nominating cardinals without Wikipedia entries?

Unquestionably, the Holy See has demonstrated the importance of digital visibility. It is not only essential to have a Wikipedia presence but also to ensure that it is positive and factual. The dynamic character of the encyclopedia demands constant attention to changes that will keep the subject’s information current as well as to extraneous changes that require correction in online content. This need is addressed today by WikipediaAlerts.com, an application of OnlineVisibilityExperts.com.

Before you can even think about monitoring changes, however, you have to create an article that satisfies Wikipedia standards and is reader-friendly. Meeting this challenge requires professional skills and extensive experience, now available from Wikiexperts.us. In a world where virtual information crucially affects real life, be cautious and seek assistance to present yourself positively and accurately.

It really is the season of giving, sharing and caring. It is probably one of the only times of year when the majority of us actually feels warm, fuzzy, happy, compassionate, and generous when we shop. And now a relatively new website, Filanthropists.com, makes it easy for all of us to shop for fun and interesting gifts that actually give back.
Filanthropists.com is a relatively new website with a concept that is becoming quite popular: merchants teaming up with charitable organizations and vice-versa for a win-win outcome.

Holiday shopping, as it is, can be overwhelming, but when you narrow your options to those merchants that donate to one of your favorite charities, it makes it for a fun and rewarding shopping experience. To make your shopping experience even that much easier, Filanthropists.com just released their first annual 2011 “Gifts That Give Back” Holiday Gift Guide.

“I’m delighted to present our first ‘Gifts That Give Back’ Holiday Gift Guide,” said Filanthropist.com’s Founder/CEO Filomena Laforgia. “The holiday season is a time for both personal gifting and for charitable giving, and Filanthropists.com is at the intersection of both. Every product we feature is affiliated with a charity or nonprofit organization, so shoppers can feel good knowing that while their gift is bringing happiness to the recipient, it’s enabling charities and nonprofits to continue their good work.”

Filanthropists.com has more than 300 cool items in over 25 different categories from over 70 merchants to choose from which benefit a wide selection of nonprofits. There is definitely something for everyone on your holiday shopping list, including your pet. One of my favorite items was the “Choose Haiti” bracelet made out of 100% recycled material for $10 ($4 goes to help rebuild Haiti, a cause that almost seems forgotten). Some items even have free shipping.

So, check them out and shop to your heart’s delight with gifts that have meaning and support a charity or cause that is important to you. Here is their list:

#1. Broadway Cares Collection 2011 Snow Globe. 100% of the profits support Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS.
#2. Grace, artwork. 100% of the purchase price benefits the Sea Turtle Restoration Project.
#3. Dr. Zahi Hawass Explorer’s Hat. 100% of the purchase price benefits Suzanne Mubarak Children’s Museum building fund in Cairo, Egypt.
#4. Orphan Bracelet. 100% of the purchase price benefits Until There’s A Cure.
#5. The Love Bag. 100% of proceeds from all sales from The Ashe’ Collection directly benefit UNITE The World with Africa’s work to advance women’s health, education and microfinance programs in Tanzania.
#6. Lion’s Head Golf Club Covers. A portion of the purchase price benefits the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation.
#7. Same Sky Bracelet — Pink Glass Bead. 100% of the purchase price benefits CODEPINK.
#8. 2012 Fossey Fund Calendar. 100% of the purchase price benefits Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International.
#9. 7 Fold Printed Neat Tie. 60% of the purchase price benefits Autism Speaks.
#10. Samadhi Yoga Package. $8.50 of the purchase price benefits Yoga Bear.
#11. “Gardena,” artwork. 20% of the sale price will be donated to DonorsChoose.org to help support art projects in schools.
#12. Cat Toy Mouse Mini. 100% of the purchase price benefits those communities who are part of the Snow Leopard Trust’s conservation program.
#13. Bird Wallet. 20% of the purchase price benefits Born Free USA.
#14. My Own Pet Balloons. $5.00 of the purchase price benefits Canines For Disabled Kids.

This is definitely a great website with a great “win-win” approach for everyone alike (merchants, charities and consumers). If you’re a charitable organization/nonprofit or a merchant, hook up with Filanthropists.com – they can help you find a partner and together you can make a bigger difference.

Happy shopping, giving and caring . . . and of course, FELICES FIESTAS!

Are you ready for Metro?

Microsoft’s newest update (now available after a 9-hour delay) today marks a big step for the company in trying to become a leader in entertainment in its users’ living rooms.

For Microsoft, the availability of the new interface (known as Metro) is expanding from the Windows Phone 7 smartphones to the Xbox 360 starting today, and in 2012, it will offer a new versión of its computer operating system, Windows 8, with touch-based charcteristics on its interface. For now, Xbox 360 users will have to get used to Metro after 3 years of using the now-old interface that is being replaced by millions of people.

Besides the new interface, new services will be offered for users of the paid subscription service Xbox Live Gold, though some selected services will be used by game players for free. Gold users will enjoy watching TV channels live via Xbox Live. Diverse TV channels will be seen in over 20 countries.

After the update, some aplicaciones have to be downloaded again (such as ESPN, Netflix, Hulu Plus, etc.).

Cyber Monday may be over, but let’s face it, as long as the tree lights continue to twinkle and the Christmas carols continue to play, we will continue to shop online until the very last possible second: it is fun, convenient and some of us are the biggest procrastinators. Shopping online, in the comfort of our own homes, with our own computers/laptops or mobile devices sounds pretty safe — doesn’t it? Well, unfortunately, cybercriminals are on the lookout for ways to “scrooge” your holiday online shopping experience. No matter what device you plan to use for holiday shopping, whether it’s your smartphone, tablet or computer, you need to protect your personal information to ensure you’re shopping safely and securely online. According to a forecast by the National Retail Federation predicts that 46.7% of respondents say they’ll purchase holiday items online this season, up from 43.9% a year ago — which means plenty opportunities for these cybercriminals to do some holiday scrooging of their own.

Luckily, I came across this great little article by the Geek Squad team with tips to help consumers practice safe online habits that can help anyone shop a little more safely this holiday season. Here it goes:

• Safeguard Your Devices – Using your mobile device to make holiday purchases is a quick, easy way to get ahead of the game and avoid the rush, and consumers are taking advantage of this. In fact, 52.6% of the respondents in the NRF survey, who claim to have a smartphone, plan on using their device to aid their holiday shopping. If you plan to shop on the go, take the proper security precautions:

o Make sure you only shop from reputable retailers and double check the web address before sending your information.
o Some smartphones may default to an open wireless network when available, rather than using up the data from your data plan. Make sure you aren’t using an open wireless network when shopping online, as your data there is not secure. That means no crossing off the shopping list while accessing the WiFi connection in your local coffee shop.
o Lock your device with a master password. You should also password-protect your device if you are using your credit card to make purchases. If a misplaced device ends up in the wrong hands, you’ll be thankful that a secure password is in place. A device that isn’t password protected makes it that much easier for a cybercriminal to access your information. As always, make sure you choose a password that attackers won’t guess –no birthdays or addresses!

• Secure Your Network – Prevent unauthorized access to your PC or laptop from the Internet by installing proper Firewall Software. Firewalls help keep your PC secure while you surf the Web and avoid the throngs of shoppers. These firewalls help protect your personal information, and can help block it from being transmitted over the Web. Careful though … configuring a firewall can be tricky and improperly doing so can prevent any access at all.

• Avoid Holiday Spam – During the holiday season, consumers are more susceptible to spam because they are shopping online more and eager to find good gift ideas. What’s even scarier is that spammers use seasonal hooks and holiday-themed subject lines to lure people into reading their e-mails. Geek Squad’s Advice:
o Do a quick, free diagnostic scan for spyware and viruses by going to the Geek Squad Security Center http://www.geeksquad.com/do-it-yourself/tools/scan-for-viruses-and-spyware.aspx
o Do not open an e-mail or click on a link from someone you do not know, and if you see a strange attachment from someone you do know, check with them first to see if they actually sent it.
o When in doubt, retype a website yourself if someone sends it to you.
o Install anti-spyware programs and anti-virus programs.
o Make sure your operating system is up to date.

• Update Passwords – If the sites you’re shopping on require you to register, create a strong password.
o Geek Squad recommends that you treat your password like the key to your front door. Pick a strong password, don’t share it and don’t write it down.
o Never use a personal nickname, pet name, birth date, address or other public information as your password. This information is surprisingly easy to find.
o Never use whole words you find in the dictionary.
o Use different passwords for different websites.
o Take advantage of the shift key, and use the available characters in addition to numbers and capital letters.

• Keep your credit card information in your wallet – Geek Squad recommends that you NEVER store your credit card or other personal information on websites, which could be vulnerable to hackers and scam artists. However, if you’re addicted to the time saving that storing your card information means, use cards with a low credit limit.

• Guard Your Gear – Beware of wandering eyes! Keep an eye out for seat neighbors who might try to read your screen if you’re browsing in any public place. You may want to think about investing in a privacy screen or filter, which fits easily over your computer’s screen, and can be found in all shapes and sizes. Also, never leave your laptop unattended in a public place.

• Safeguard your Job – Cyber security is only half the battle. If you’re at work during this shopping holiday, here are some tips and tricks to keep you out of trouble with your boss. Cyber Monday is still a Monday, after all.
o Plan ahead: Geek Squad suggests consumers scope out many of these deals ahead of time at a variety of Websites such as Black Friday Ads, The Black Friday, The Cyber Monday, TGI Black Friday, Black Friday Info, Deal News, Cyber Monday.net and CyberMonday.com. Knowing what you’re going to buy ahead of time keeps online surfing time to a minimum, so you can get all your Cyber Monday shopping done during your lunch hour.
o Download the CyberMonday Deals 2011 shopping application to your smartphone to browse through over a thousand items that are listed on popular holiday gift lists.
o Here’s a trick to quickly switch between online shopping sites and work documents if you hear your boss coming down the hall. Hold ALT down and hit the Tab button to scroll through all maximized screens. Release the ALT button once your preferred screen is up – whether it be to shop or look like you are working on that end of year budget!

Felices and safe “Wired” holiday shopping!

Out of Milk is a must have app for those of us that need lists to remember things. Out of Milk is not just a standard shopping list, it has many features. My favorite is the bar code scanner. As I walk around my house and notice I’m running low on something, I simply pull out my phone, scan the code and there it is, added to my shopping list. It also comes in handy for remembering the brand of the specific product. I spent years looking for the right bar soap, toilet paper, dish soap, etc. I find that when I’m at the store I forget which is my favorite because of all the options! With Out of Milk, you scan the item from your home directly to the list, no more worry of having to remember which product to pick.

There are lots of other great features on this app. It also offers a pantry list so that you can keep track of the items you already have and a To-Do List so that you can keep track of all the grocery shopping and other tasks that need to be completed

Out of Milk is available on the Android OS for free, the pro version can be purchased for $4.99.
